INTERNET CENSORSHIP & WHAT IS TOTALITARIANISM?

November 29th 2009 - In the debate on Information Clearing House (ICH) and other web sites, some interesting points concerning Internet censorship and the question 'What is totalitarianism' as written about by Michael Kleen, a couple of points were made. The story to start with, was this:

November 27, 2009 - STR - November 12, 2009 - If the United States came under the control of a totalitarian regime, would we recognize it? This question is of utmost importance today, when many of us harbor fears that some time in the near future ideas such as freedom, liberty, and privacy will be alien to our society. But as we witness the regular passage of legislation designed to restrict and regulate, and the tendency of the Federal government to increase rather than decrease its power (with a handful of exceptions), we are struck by the uninterrupted routine of life in the USA . As the central government brings more and more of private society under its control, we continue to watch cable TV, shop at supermarkets overflowing with products, and eat at our favorite restaurants. Could it be that we have already passed that dreaded threshold and missed it?

The trouble with diagnosing our condition is that most people are unaware of what totalitarianism actually is. Among even the most politically astute, there is little mental room for the possibility that a state in the process of becoming totalitarian might lack the most brutal and outward signs of oppressive regimes portrayed in popular culture. Because of our rather simplistic frame of reference—picture black and white images of National Socialist Germany or the Soviet Union —we recognize a country as either being in the advanced stages of totalitarianism or not at all. CENSORSHIP IS LIKE CANCER

This censorship on Internet is like a cancer, it's an emerging global trend. The so called 'governments' - the collaborators of the global criminal cartel - within the sphere of interest (pun intended) of the US/UK/NATO and israeli mercenaries war machine, see what's left of the freedom of speech on Internet as a dangerous power. That's why they want to curb it too. Like all other human rights.

Concerning this censorship, starting with China: "IT companies may be relieved that the Green Dam regulation has been halted but there are concerns that the respite is temporary. Rebecca MacKinnon, a founding member of GNI (Global Network Initiative) cautions that "it would be naïve to think that scrapping the Green Dam mandate means the end of headaches for computer- and device-makers world-wide". MacKinnon, an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Hong Kong, is writing a book about China and the internet.

"More and more governments — including democracies like Britain, Australia and Germany — are trying to control public behaviour online, especially by exerting pressure on internet service providers (ISPs). Green Dam has only exposed the next frontier in these efforts: the personal computer," she writes in an article, The Green Dam phenomenon, published in the Wall Street Journal on 18 June.

The German Parliament on 18 June passed a bill requiring the police to maintain a list of websites accused of containing child pornography. The list will be distributed to German ISPs, which will be required to restrict access to these websites. "In a petition against the bill, German civil liberties groups call it un-transparent and uncontrollable, since the block lists cannot be inspected, nor are the criteria for putting a [website] on the list properly defined," MacKinnon says.

"These concerns aren't unfounded: Some German politicians have already suggested extending the block list to Islamist [websites], video games and gambling [websites], while book publishers have suggested it would also be nice to block file-sharing sites too."

The British and Australian governments have also adopted mandatory filtering policies in recent years, aimed at blocking children's access to potentially harmful content. While the intention is good, critics are worried that the block lists may not be done in a transparent and accountable way, and may be done in the absence of a clear appeal process." - [end excerpt]

'THE NEW TOTALITARIANS' AND FULL SPECTRUM CONTROL

And, of course also the US has turned into a totalitarian and police state. It's all part of the long-term planning. Look at the Patriot and other 'acts': not a shred of freedom is left, and the people are not informed about the different facets either. They don't hear the sound of 'Nearer to you, my God' either. The US Titanic stays on this godforsaken course.

It reminded me of something similar, and some other real confrontations with totalitarian states, within the criminal cartel's global corporation too. Just before I decided to leave for Chile in 1971 - by Pinochet and the CIA on 11 September 1973 turned into a totalitarian state too - in 1969 and 1970 we tried to have a book published by Roland Huntford, the Stockholm correspondent of The Observer about Sweden.

Roland Huntford in his book gave many examples that Sweden was not so much anymore going 'The Middle Way,' as was written in a book by Marquis Childs, an American journalist, chronicling his research on the reform policies of the Swedish Social Democratic Party based on his visits to the country as a reporter. Because Roland Huntford, who lived there, was explaining how Sweden was turning into a state for - as the title of the book also was: 'The New Totalitarians.'

Certainly: the rest of the social services in Sweden were many times better and more humane than ever in the US for instance, but already at that time it showed to be impossible to have Huntford's book printed in Sweden. Nobody dared to... And that's totalitarian.

Anyhow: Huntford's book concerning The New Totalitarians had to be printed in neighboring Finland - where they totally agreed, concerning the totalitarian course Sweden was taking - and than the book was shipped to Sweden.

It showed that A.J. Liebling was totally correct when stating: "Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one."

By Lucian Constantin, Web News Editor - 6th of November 2009 - The website of the Swedish National Defence Radio Establishment (Forsvarets Radioanstalt) has been the target of a prolonged denial of service attack this week. There is some speculation that the incident was caused to protest to the agency's new role of intercepting and monitoring Internet traffic passing through Sweden.

Forsvarets Radioanstalt (FRA) is an intelligence agency of the Swedish government, subordinated to the country's Ministry of Defence. It was official established in 1942 and its primary role was radio signal interception and monitoring. In June 2008, the Swedish Parliament passed anti-terrorism legislation allowing FRA to coduct warrantless wiretapping of telephone and Internet communications that crosses Swedish borders. This includes all international Internet traffic that passes through Sweden, such as Russia's. The law went into effect at the beginning of January but the actual monitoring started last month.

The DoS attack on FRA's website began on Monday evening and according to a report from the Pingdom uptime monitoring service, extended well into Tuesday and Wednesday. This type of attack involves overloading a server with bogus requests until it is unable to process legit ones.

The total downtime suffered was of almost 29 hours, but according to an official announcement (in Swedish), it did not affect the agency's work. "FRA has good protection for its operations, since they are physically detached from the Internet at the authority," Jan Donner, FRA's director of information security, explained (rough translation from Swedish).

It is worth noting that FRA is not the only Swedish authority to be attacked in this way in recent times. Last week, the website of the Swedish police forces was the target of a similar denial of service attack, launched from compromised hosts in China and the United States.

"We have recently seen that this type of cyber attacks have increased and there are many organizations who have been affected. It is difficult to defend against attacks of the kind, which attempt to overwhelm a website," Mr. Jan Donner concluded." - [and end] - Url.: http://tinyurl.com/yfyfjx9
